Die Hauptstadt Costa Ricas San José liegt im Zentrum des Landes auf einem innervulkanischen Plateau auf fast 1200 Metern. Während im Kerngebiet der Stadt nur rund 340.000 Menschen leben, sind es im Ballungsraum über 1,6 Millionen Personen. Erst im 18. Jahrhundert wurde aus dem bis dato unwichtigen José die Hauptstadt und verfügt daher über wenig Kolonialarchitektur, was sie von anderen Hauptstädten Lateinamerikas unterscheidet. Die Stadt ist das politische, ökonomische und soziale Zentrum und Knotenpunkt der Verkehrswege im Land.
Die Lutherische Kirche in Costa Rica (ILCO) hat ihren Sitz in San José. Vom zentralen Kirchenbüro aus wird eine ganzheitliche Mission gelebt, die sich dem Evangelium durch soziales Handeln in der Diakonie in ländlichen und städtischen Gebieten verschreibt. In der Nähe der Kirchenverwaltung befindet sich die Theologische Hochschule Lateinamerikas (UBL).
The capital of Costa Rica, San José, is located in the center of the country on an intra-volcanic plateau at an altitude of almost 1,200 meters. While only around 340,000 people live in the city’s core area, there are over 1.6 million people in the metropolitan area. It was not until the 18th century that the previously unimportant José became the capital and therefore has little colonial architecture, which distinguishes it from other capital cities in Latin America. The city is the political, economic and social center and hub of the country’s transport routes.
The Lutheran Church in Costa Rica (ILCO) has its headquarters in San José. From the central church office, a holistic mission is practiced that is committed to the gospel through social action in diaconia in rural and urban areas. The Theological University of Latin America (UBL) is located close to the church administration.
