Guatemala-Stadt (spanisch Ciudad de Guatemala) liegt umgeben von Vulkanen auf über 1500 Metern Höhe. In der Stadt leben heute über 1,2 Millionen Menschen, im Ballungsraum sind es über 3,6 Millionen. Die Geschichte und das Bild der Stadt sind von den Erdbeben der Region geprägt. Eine historische koloniale Altstadt, die immer wieder aufgebaut wurde, wird von modernen Hochhäusern umgeben. Guatemala-Stadt ist das politische und wirtschaftliche Zentrum des Landes und auch Sitz des Zentralamerikanischen Parlaments.
Die Lutherische Kirche Augsburgischen Bekenntnisses in Guatemala (ILAG) wurde 1991 hier durch die Pastoren Horacio und Esther Castillo gemeinsam mit ihren Kindern gegründet. Nach einem 36-jährigen Bürgerkrieg half die Lutherische Kirche aus dem Exil Zurückgekehrten dabei, spirituell und räumlich wieder eine Heimat zu finden. Guatemala-Stadt ist heute Sitz des Kirchenbüros und von 18 Gemeinden auf Stadtgebiet.
Guatemala City (Ciudad de Guatemala in Spanish) is surrounded by volcanoes at an altitude of over 1500 meters. Today, over 1.2 million people live in the city and over 3.6 million in the metropolitan area. The city’s history and image have been shaped by the region’s earthquakes. A historic colonial old town, which has been rebuilt again and again, is surrounded by modern high-rise buildings. Guatemala City is the political and economic center of the country and also the seat of the Central American Parliament.
The Lutheran Church of the Augsburg Confession in Guatemala (ILAG) was founded here in 1991 by pastors Horacio and Esther Castillo together with their children. After 36 years of civil war, the Lutheran Church helped those who had returned from exile to find a spiritual and physical home again. Today, Guatemala City is home to the church office and 18 congregations in the city.
