Andacht – Gesucht: Gutmenschen

 

„Gutmenschen“ – das Unwort des Jahres 2015 poppt im Zusammenhang mit den Ereignissen in Moria und deren Konsequenzen wieder auf. Der Brand in Moria hat die Diskussion über die Aufnahme von Menschen, die geflohen sind, neu angeregt. Gutmenschen sind jetzt für manche die, die sich Sorgen machen, dass bei Europas Umgang mit Geflüchteten die Menschlichkeit auf der Strecke bleibt, die Europa ansonsten gerne für sich in Anspruch nimmt. Die Gutmenschen-Kritiker/innen meinen: Wer Geflüchtete aufnehmen will, habe keine Ahnung von den politischen Realitäten, die zu hartem Handeln zwängen.

Wenn ich darüber nachdenke, finde ich es eigentlich gut, „Gutmensch“ genannt zu werden. Das möchte ich gerne sein: ein guter Mensch, einer, dem andere Menschen wichtig sind, und dem es nicht egal ist, wenn sie unter menschenunwürdigen Zuständen dahinvegetieren müssen. Jesus hat diese Haltung für mich vorgelebt und Worte wie die aus dem 1. Timotheus bestärken mich darin: Den Reichen in dieser Welt gebiete, […] dass sie Gutes tun, reich werden an guten Werken, gerne geben, zum Teilen bereit sind.“

In diesem Sinn: Die Welt braucht Gutmenschen – dringend!

“Gutmenschen” (do-gooders) was choosen as inappropriate word of the year in Germany 2015. It pops up again in connection with the discussions about the consequences of the fire in the refugee camp Moria in Greece. The events in Moria have rekindled the discussion about the reception of people who have fled. For some, do-gooders are now those who are worried that Europe’s treatment of refugees is contrary to the humanity that Europe claims to be one of its foundations. The allegation is that the do-gooders – those who want to welcome refugees in their countries – have no idea of the political realities that force Europe to take tough action.

When I think about it, I actually think it is good to be called a do-gooder. That is what I would like to be: a good person, someone who cares about other people and who cares if they are forced to languish in inhumane conditions. Jesus exemplified this attitude for me, and words like the one from 1 Timothy encourage me in this: “Command the rich to do what is good. Tell them to be rich in doing good things. They must give freely. They must be willing to share.”

In this sense. The world needs do-gooders – urgently!
